Østerø Lake, which the route starts around, forms the central part of Natura 2000 area no. 115 Østerø Sø on 57 hectares, which in addition to the lake also includes coastal lagoons, beach lakes, seawalls and salt marshes. A bird tower has been erected on the east side of the lake, from which there is a good overview of the area. The area is an important breeding and foraging area for many ducks and wading birds, and on the salt meadows there is a species-rich vegetation.
On the west side of the lake is Slipshavn Forest, to the north are the remains of the old ferry port, the former ice boat station and the motorway with the big belt connection; At the far end of the peninsula to the east is Knudshoved Lighthouse, and a reconstruction of the old tilting lighthouse. To the southwest lie Slipshavn and Nyborg Fjord.
The whole of Knudshoved was protected in 2004 and the protection covers 210 hectares.
On the Knudshoved peninsula from 1957-1998, the Halsskov-Knudshoved ferry route went from here to Zealand, and in 1997 the railway part of the Great Belt link opened . When the road connection opened, the ferry closed.
Furthermore, we will run on Hjeljevej in a westerly direction, which seems boring to many. But consider that the biggest sporting event ever on Danish soil took place just over a year ago. The Tour de France field had just crossed the Storebæltsbroen before coming to the dramatic run-up on the Storebæltsvej, where Dutchman Fabio Jakobsen won the 2nd stage.
The stage is remembered for many incredibly beautiful images of Denmark bathed in sunshine, a sea of spectators , the Royal ship Dannebrog, which passed under the Great Belt Bridge at the same time as the Maersk Mc-Kinney Møller ship in the opposite direction. Of cycling fans, it was probably Magnus Cort's dotted mountain jersey anyway.
