Description
The Marathon des Sables is a legendary race and adventure taking place in the southern Moroccan Sahara Desert since 1986.
The adventure features 11 days in Morocco, including 9 in the desert and a route of approximately 250 km spread over six stages. This extraordinary race is considered one of the toughest footraces in the world, testing the limits of endurance, resilience, and self-sufficiency.
Since its beginning, more than 30,000 people have embarked on the adventure.
On average, each year:
60 nationalities represented
More than 30% walkers
Average age: 51 years old
90% finishers
Average speed of 5.2 km/h
The time limits are set at 3 km/h, which allows walkers to finish the adventure on time and at their own pace.
The Marathon des Sables is self-sufficient in food. Throughout the adventure, competitors must carry all their equipment and food, with the exception of water and the tent, which are provided by the organization. The competitors are also self-sufficient in food as soon as they arrive on Day 1 at the bivouac!
On the route, checkpoints are located approximately every 10 km to ensure water supplies. These supply points are also used to rest and eat. Participants also receive a water ration upon arrival at the bivouac, for the evening and the morning.
