Description
Ultra X Azores is an event that takes place in June each year on the volcanic island of São Miguel in the Azores. It offers two races: Ultra X 110 Azores and Ultra X 50 Azores. The 110 event is a two-stage race taking place on Saturday and Sunday, whilst the 50 event is a single-stage race taking place on the Sunday, following the same route but starting 1 hour later.
Governed by Portugal, this wild and remote archipelago is characterised by dramatic landscapes, fishing villages, mountain trails, lagoons, volcanic craters and luscious green pastures. Due to the marine influence, the climate of the Azores is very mild for such a northern location and temperatures remain around 20°C all year round.
There are two stages, Saturday and Sunday. The first stage is 61km and
will commence at 07:30. It takes runners from the hot springs at the
town of Furnas through the centre of the island, to the campsite at the
forestry reserve of Pinhal da Paz. The second stage is 56km and will
commence at 07:00/08:00. It heads out to the western side of the island
to circumnavigate the iconic volcanic crater at Sete Cidades, before
finishing along the harbour front in Ponta Delgada.
There are checkpoints stationed approximately 10km apart where
competitors can access water, shelter, and if necessary medical support.
On Saturday night, competitors doing the multi-stage 110 race will camp
at the beautiful forestry reserve of Pinhal da Paz, where they can enjoy
osteopathy/physiotherapy treatment, medical care, and hot water.
Ultra X Azores’ races are both UTMB® Index Races, in the 100k and 50k categories respectively.
