Kongskilde Nature Center is located in the most north-western part of the Tystrup-Bavelse Søerne. This part of the absolute southernmost part of Sorø Municipality, before it changes to Næstved. In the northwesternmost part of Tystrup Sø is Sorø's only and most sought-after bathing/sand beach (Sorø Sø by Parnas and Skjolden (v. Restaurant Støvletkatrines Hus) are also favorite bathing destinations, but without sand).
Between Sorø and Næstved you can you can experience some of the most dramatic natural scenes in Midtsjælland. The landscape is so distinctive and valuable that the area was already partially protected in the early 1960s with a view to giving it the status of a nature park. The Norwegian Nature Agency today owns approx. 390 ha of the area distributed over three locations: Kongskilde-Frederikskilde, Hørhaven and Suserup. At Tystrup-Bavelse, the gentle central Zealand farmland transforms into an Ice Age landscape with hills, ancient forest, lakes and Zealand's largest river, the Suså.
An ice flow from the northeast formed the area's large hilly tract about 22,000 years ago. Five thousand years later, a new ice flow came and the meltwater from here dug the valley where Tystrup Sø is now.
Birdlife: The lakes and their surroundings with forests, meadows and fields can show a very rich and varied birdlife throughout the year.
During the breeding season, there are a number of species of typical forest birds in the forests, including birds of prey and owls.
Suserup Forest contains its special nature cave-nesting bird species such as woodpeckers, woodpeckers, pigeons and pied flycatchers.
Along the banks of the lakes, grebes, ducks and various reed forest birds, including reed hawks, breed.
Several species of waders breed. including beach damage, red leg and large priest's collar.
