Description

Arena of Memories – a Fahrenheit 451 inspired race In a dystopian world inspired by Ray Bradbury’s “Fahrenheit 451”, humanity lives in a society where ‘The System’ effectively controls and suppresses memories of another time, when truth was not controlled by the media, where books were not banned and where critical thinking was a virtue. The repression is pervasive, and the technological control ensures that every aspect of life is monitored. The System has eradicated all individual memory and cultural history, so that the population only knows one version of the world – the official version. Everyone has been forced to forget their origins and personal history through the systematic “erasure” of memories. Any attempt to recover these memories and stories has been made illegal. However, the System has recognized that no matter how effectively they erase memories, some people will always hunger for their origins and a connection to a forgotten history. This longing causes people to question the official version of reality and a revolution simmers beneath the surface. In response, the System has created the Arena of Memories; a controlled, live-tracked event where select citizens are allowed to search for these memories – but only as part of a public gladiatorial battle, where the elite watch and amuse themselves with the participants’ fight against time and their own desperation. The Arena of Memories is presented by the System as a battle for personal memories and history. A way to recover what was lost. But to the trained eye, the real purpose is clear. The Arena of Memories is nothing more than another tool for oppression and control. You are a member of the Shadow of Paper, a secret resistance movement that is at the forefront of the smoldering revolution. You are a weak flame that breaks the all-encompassing darkness, but all it takes is Memory Fragments, and then the revolution will break out in a bright flame. Although the Arena of Memories is controlled by the System, it is the best opportunity you have to secure valuable Memory Fragments. For the first time in history, we have managed to infiltrate the Arena of Memories and place more of your side as participants. For every Memory Fragment that is secured, the revolution comes one step closer. The dream of a society where critical thinking is once again a virtue, and where knowledge is not reserved for the specially chosen, is just around the corner! Do you dare to take the chance in the Arena of Memories as an agent of the Shadow of Paper? You have 3 hours to get as far away from the heart of the System as possible, to find the most valuable Memory Fragments. After that, you have 3 hours to return and secure them before they are lost forever, when the System begins the automatic erasure of collected Memory Fragments. You probably know approximately how far you can run in 3 hours. You may also know approximately how far you can run in 6 hours. But what if you have to run as far away as possible in 3 hours, but at the same time no further than you can return within 6 hours - do you know how far you can run? And what if you have to plan your route yourself - and the distance is measured as the crow flies from the start? The Arena of Memories is a unique running event where participants are challenged on their physical ability, but also mentally. Here there is no route, no direction and no markings. You have to manage on foot, but whether you move north or south, east or west is entirely up to you - as long as you remember the way back home! You can receive help along the way, or you can manage on your own. The options are many and the rules are simple, so most people who are fresh for a challenge can join in. The race consists of two phases: Search for the Memory Fragments. Here you have to run as far away as possible within 3 hours. Every step is recorded and the further you get away - measured as the crow flies - the more valuable to the revolution the Memory Fragments you can bring back. And thus a higher score in the overall account.   Returning the Memory Fragments. When the three hours have passed, it is important to get back to the start. There is no bonus for getting back before the three hours have passed, but for every minute you exceed you get penalty points, as the memories have already begun to fade from memory. In phase 1, it is about finding the route where you get the furthest away as efficiently as possible. Here it is largely about planning a route optimally and not running so far that you cannot reach home in phase 2. After exactly 3 hours, note how far away from the start you have come and phase 2 begins. You now have a maximum of 3 hours to get back to the start. With 3 hours in your legs, it is important to have saved up your energy, but also to run the right way home. A wrong turn can cost precious minutes, and if you are unlucky and the bridge is up, you may have to sprint to avoid penalty points. Every minute costs a lot, and the penalty hits hard from the first minute! At the start, a GPS tracker will be given out so that all participants can be tracked live on Løbetosset.dk. It is possible to see the total distance from the start for all participants in phase 1 as well as their route. And when phase 2 begins, everyone can watch as the participants fight a relentless battle against the clock to get back within the time limit. The rules You must transport yourself on foot and by yourself during the entire race. You must plan your route in advance and use any electronic aids you may find necessary to navigate (rule #1 still applies, of course). You may receive help along the way. Pacers, guides and private depots are allowed, but rule #1 must be adhered to at all times. The GPS tracker provided must be worn throughout the race. If this is lost, the participant is considered a deserter and done for (DNF). The distance the participant has traveled after exactly 3 hours counts as points. Participants who do not return within exactly 6 hours after the start will be penalized per minute started (See penalty assessment below). All traffic rules must be observed, and privacy must also be respected. This means that you do not run onto private property or through people's gardens. If this is not observed, the participant is considered a deserter and done for (DNF). Penalty assessment The penalty for not returning within the time limit is calculated according to how far a participant has come in phase 1. The penalty is a factor of 3, so one minute of penalty costs what is equivalent to 3 minutes of running. See examples below Example 1: In phase 1, Torben has run 25.37 km - measured as the crow flies - from the start. He therefore receives 2537 points. Torben has thus moved 0.14 km per minute (25.37 km/180 minutes). For every minute Torben enters after 6 hours (per minute started), 42 points are deducted. Torben enters after 6 hours and 5 minutes, so he gets 5*42 = 210 points in penalty and therefore ends up with 2327 points. In practice, the 5 minutes have cost Torben a little over 2 km. Example 2: In phase 1, Tina has run 19.67 km - finish as the crow flies - from the start. She therefore gets 1967 points. Tina has moved 0.11 km per minute (19.67 km/180 minutes). For every minute Tina enters after 6 hours (per minute started), 33 points are deducted. Tina comes in together with Torben after 6 hours and 5 minutes, so she gets 5*33 = 165 points in penalty and therefore ends up with 1802 points. In practice, the 5 minutes have cost Tina a little over 1½ km. Even though Torben and Tina have exceeded the time limit by the same amount, and it seems at first glance that Torben is being penalized more severely than Tina, they have both received the same percentage in penalty for the same minutes. If they had received the same penalty points for the same time limit, Tina would have been hit harder than Torben, as Tina has run shorter and the penalty will therefore constitute a larger proportion of her total points. Tracking and live coverage All participants will be given a GPS tracker prior to the start. This reports the position of the runner back to the organizer at regular intervals and updates a live map on Løbetosset.dk, showing where the participants are, their route and their points from phase 1. Depot and toilets The race should be considered largely self-supported. Before the start, a small 'start depot' containing some energy is given out. Furthermore, as mentioned in rule #3, it is allowed to receive help along the way, just as it is allowed to buy fresh supplies in the shops you encounter along the way. There are no toilets set up, but fortunately there is no shortage of nice public toilets in Denmark, so we encourage you to consider access to public toilets in your planning. Completion and winners All participants who return within 6½ hours are considered to have completed. There is a winner for men and women. The winner is the one with the most points after penalties. Memorabilia for all who complete Everyone who completes will receive a memorabilia, as a tangible reminder of a special event where you may have been challenged a little extra both mentally and physically. Ending and fun To end an eventful day, there will be a barbecue where we will host some sausages and bread as well as soda and beer. Here there is room to share experiences with each other off the route, and it is of course also here that we will celebrate that the revolution has come one step closer and especially celebrate the special efforts of the best agents to secure Memory Fragments for the Shadow of Paper!
