Join the last race in 2023!

How about celebrating the end of 2023 with one last race? Then the Ålesund New Year's Marathon is perfect for you!

Ålesund New Year's Marathon is normally the last marathon event of the year in Norway.

The idea behind the New Year's Marathon is to take advantage of Western Norway's mild and snow-poor winter climate to provide an offer to hungry runners at a time when there are not many such events. Ålesund New Year's Marathon usually runs on a day during Christmas. In 2023, the event will be held on Thursday 28 December.

Distances:

5 km without time, 5 km with time, half marathon and full marathon.

Where:

The race starts at Moa in Spjelkavika, between Moa Bus Station and Spjelkavik Omsorgsenter. The trail follows Gamle Brusdalsvei past Reiakvam, over the footbridge and back down to Europaveien. Where the road meets the Europaveien, the runners turn around and return to the starting area. The half-marathon runners run this lap once (back and forth), while the marathon runners must run two laps.

How:

The race goes on an asphalt road, but is flat and easy to run. We have a slight but tough downhill (600 m) on the way back at Viddal Gartneri, 4 km from the finish line. There is little car traffic here, and nature is magnificent along Brusdalsvatnet on a beautiful Christmas day. This year there will be drink stations at each end of the trail and in the middle of the trail. If the road surface is smooth, it will be salted. In case of snow. the road will be plowed.

After approx. 600m from the start, you must cross the national road over a pedestrian crossing. Be aware of car traffic here, even if there will be guards. There will also be a guard at the car shops in Fremmerholen. There will be an accompanying car or cyclist in front of the first runner in both distances. We take passing times at the end of the trail, inside Brusdalen. In recent years, a 5 km race has also been organized where the participants turn around at Rødset.

Cloakrooms will this year be found at Moa Svømmehall, just 200 meters from the start/finish area after the race. Show the start number in the hatch.

Start number and price:

Start numbers will be distributed on Wednesday 27 December 2023 from 17 – at 19 and on race day from 09.00-12.00 in the church basement of Spjelkavik church in Moa. All runners receive a participation medal as they cross the finish line. The starting fee is NOK 200 for 5 km without time, NOK 300 for 5 km with time, NOK 450 for half marathon and NOK 500 for full marathon. In the last week before the race, the starting quotas rise by a further NOK 100. We do not charge a license fee for our races.

Charity:

In 2023, all profits go to Church Aid.

Prizes:

The prize distribution takes place in the basement of Spjelkavik church at 3 p.m. There will be a participant medal or for everyone in the finish area. At the prize-giving, there will be trophies for the class winners and prizes for the overall winners of the two longest distances. In 5 km there will be a prize for the best woman and man.

History:

Ålesund New Years Marathon will be held on Thursday 28 December 2023 for the 24th time. It all started on 31 December 1999, starting at Sjøholt and finishing in the center of Ålesund. The first winner was Leif Feøy. In 2001, the race was canceled due to too much snow and severe cold.
