Exclusive Interview with Venicemarathon Organizer: A Personal Journey Through the Heart of Venice

At Run Again, we’re always on the lookout for the most unique and unforgettable running experiences for our readers. This time, we had the chance to sit down with the organizer of the iconic Venicemarathon to get an insider's view on why this race is a must for every runner. Here’s what they had to say about the upcoming 38th edition, taking place on Sunday, October 27th, 2024.

Run Again: For those who are unfamiliar, can you introduce the Venicemarathon?

Organizer: Absolutely! The Venicemarathon is an international event that’s globally recognized and certified by the IAAF Silver Label. But beyond the prestige, what really makes it stand out is its route. It’s one of the most captivating marathons in the world, where athletes get the rare opportunity to run through the very heart of Venice. Imagine running alongside canals, crossing bridges, and navigating through ancient streets, all while being surrounded by breathtaking scenery. It’s an experience that blends sport with art, history, and culture.

Run Again: When and where does the marathon take place this year?

Organizer: The big day is Sunday, October 27th, 2024, and the race, of course, takes place in Venice. It’s an amazing time of year for running—cooler temperatures, the city dressed in autumn colors, and the magic of Venice creating an unbeatable atmosphere.

Run Again: How many participants are you expecting this year?

Organizer: We’re expecting over 15,000 runners across three distances: the full marathon (42K), the half marathon (21K), and the shorter 10K. It’s fantastic to see the event grow year after year, with participants coming from all over the world to take part.

Run Again: Tell us a little more about the course. What can runners expect to see along the way?

Organizer: I’m glad you asked because the course is truly one of a kind! It begins at Villa Pisani in Stra, an iconic Venetian villa with centuries of history. From there, runners make their way along the Riviera del Brenta, passing by more incredible villas. Then, the magic really begins when you reach Venice. Picture yourself running along the Zattere, a 2-kilometer embankment right by the Giudecca Canal. You’ll cross a 170-meter long bridge over the Grand Canal—an experience that’s built just for the marathon and taken down the very next day.

The grand finale? Running through Piazza San Marco, one of the most famous squares in the world, and crossing the finish line at Riva Sette Martiri, right on the Bacino di San Marco waterfront. It’s a course full of iconic sights, and the elevation profile is mostly flat, making it a perfect mix of beauty and performance.

Run Again: What are the usual weather conditions like on race day?

Organizer: It’s generally ideal for running—temperatures range from about 13°C to 18°C. It’s cold but not too cold, making it comfortable for both seasoned marathoners and those running for the sheer joy of it.

Run Again: Are there any important rules or special requirements runners should be aware of?

Organizer: Yes, one thing we’re really proud of is our "Enjoy and Respect Venezia" initiative. Venice is a delicate city, and we ask our participants to help us protect it by being mindful of the environment. From proper waste disposal to respecting the city’s unique waterways and historical sites, we ask runners to do their part in preserving the magic of Venice.

Run Again: Can you tell us more about accommodation options for participants?

Organizer: We’ve created a special "Running District" with four hotels located just steps from Mestre railway station. These hotels cater to a wide range of needs and budgets, and from there, it’s a quick train or bus ride to Venice itself. It’s super convenient for our runners and provides a hassle-free stay before the big day.

Run Again: What about food and drink stations during the race? How often can runners refuel?

Organizer: We have refreshment points every 5 kilometers, starting at kilometer 5. We offer water, fruit, supplements, and even biscuits. We know how important it is to keep runners hydrated and energized throughout the race.

Run Again: Are there any special perks for participants, like medals or prizes?

Organizer: Definitely! Every runner who crosses the finish line will receive a unique medal, and this year’s design pays tribute to the legendary Venetian explorer Marco Polo. It’s not just a medal—it’s a piece of Venice that you can take home with you.

Run Again: After the race, are there any local activities or attractions that participants should check out?

Organizer: Yes! We’ve partnered with the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia to offer runners access to some of Venice’s most famous museums at a discounted rate. By showing your race bib or registration confirmation, you’ll be able to explore Venetian art and history in a way that complements the race experience. And, of course, we always encourage runners to lose themselves in the city’s narrow streets, enjoy a meal at a traditional "bacari," and soak in the local culture.

Run Again: For those joining from afar, tell us a bit about Venice as a destination.

Organizer: Venice is unlike any other city in the world. The entire city and its lagoon are a UNESCO World Heritage site, and every corner is steeped in history. Even the smallest buildings house works by artists like Giorgione, Titian, and Tintoretto. It’s a city where art and architecture are interwoven with daily life, and running through it feels like moving through a living museum.

Run Again: Finally, why do you think runners should make the Venicemarathon a part of their race calendar?

Organizer: Every runner, at least once in their life, should experience the Venicemarathon. It’s not just about the race—it’s about the setting, the history, the culture, and the unforgettable feeling of crossing the finish line in one of the most beautiful cities in the world. If you’re looking for a marathon that offers more than just distance, the Venicemarathon is it. It’s a journey through time and beauty, and we can’t wait to welcome runners to this magical experience.

So, there you have it. The Venicemarathon isn’t just a race—it’s an experience that blends sport with the soul of one of the world’s most remarkable cities. Whether you’re a seasoned marathoner or a first-timer, this is one race you’ll want to add to your bucket list!
