Description
Come to Iceland to run a marathon in Reykjavik, Islandsbanki Reykjavik marathon is the biggest running event in Iceland and is always around Reykjavik's birthday, August 18.
On the same night there is a big festival in Reykjavik, Reykjavik Culture Night. The Reykjavik Marathon is a non-profit organization that was established in 1984.
The race offers an atmosphere that is both relaxed and welcoming. The Reykjavik Marathon also includes a 10k and Family Fun Run, so this is an event for the whole family. Many runners run the Family Fun Run with their family after their race.
There are four distances available:
- Marathon (42.2k)
- Half Marathon (21.1k)
- 10k
- Family Run (3k) .
Although only about 200,000 people live in the greater Reykjavik area, large crowds gather in the streets to support the runners. The marathon runs through the center of Reykjavik, a residential area, near a salmon run and close to the beach, giving runners a chance to enjoy Iceland's natural environment and spectacular scenery.
All participants of the Islandsbanki Reykjavik Marathon can collect donations on behalf of a charity of their choice, this is the largest charity fundraiser in Iceland.
The course goes through the greater part of Reykjavik. It is scenic and flat although some parts can be trying. The run starts at the same place as other distances, on Sóleyjargata and ends on Lækjargata, in front of the school Menntaskólinn við Reykjavík. The course is as follows: Ægisíða, Grandi, Sæbraut, Laugardalur, Elliðaárdalur, Bryggjuhverfi, Fossvogur, Þingholt and ends on Lækjargata.
