Are you looking for a completely new running experience? So look no further, the Mývatn Marathon is the answer! Run around Lake Mývatn in North Iceland surrounded by natural wonders and unearthly landscapes!
Where is this? In Mývatn, a nature reserve in North Iceland! An area shaped by volcanic eruptions over the centuries and known for its raw, unique beauty. In a short distance you have lava fields, waterfalls, volcanic craters, geothermal areas, hot springs and everything in between! Why not run in Iceland's most amazing destination?
When? Always the last Saturday in May! May 27, 2023! The Lava Run is the 26th, so if you want you can warm up with the Lava Run on Friday and do a marathon on Saturday.
The race goes around beautiful Mývatn on a flat asphalt road with the final sprint gently rising. Height maximum 382m. Total descending height is 177m and total ascending height is 191m.
42 km start and finish at Mývatn Nature Baths. Runners of 21 km and 10 km are transported from Mývatn Naturbad to the starting line. All races finish at the Mývatn Nature Baths.
Included in the registration fee is ACCESS TO THE MÝVATN NATURAL BATHS, chip timing and barbecue and beer at the finish line!
Online registration closes on Thursday 25 May. It is possible to sign up for the Mývatn Nature Baths on the 27th
How to get there? Akureyri is the nearest airport, an hour's drive from Mývatn. Niceair (www.niceair.is) flies directly to Akureyri from Copenhagen and Düsseldorf. Mývatn is a 6 hour drive from Reykjavík.
